Explicit Teaching: An Overview
Share
Explicit teaching is the best way to ensure that students understand what they are being taught and can apply their knowledge and skills effectively.
This is done by telling students exactly what they are learning (learning intentions), guiding them through the application of a skill with the gradual release of responsibility (I do, We do, You do) and listing a checklist for success (Success Criteria). The lesson cycle begins with the teacher modelling a skill, then gradually releasing the responsibility to the student so that they can eventually complete it by themselves.
I have created a number of supports that will assist you with applying the explicit instruction pedagogy. This includes a lesson design and instructional practices overview, a lesson template & an example lesson.
Explicit Teaching Lesson Design & Instructional Practices Overview
Lesson Design and Instructional Practices are crucial components of effective teaching. It involves the creation of learning objectives, designing engaging activities, selecting appropriate teaching strategies, and assessing student learning. I have created an overview which provides an introduction to these essential elements and explores practical approaches to create effective lessons that maximise student learning outcomes.
